Helpful Tips for Staying Well This Winter
In recognition of World COPD Day and the colder weather fast approaching. Here are a list of helpful tips for staying well this winter:
🧣 Stay Warm and Protected
- Dress warmly: Layer your clothing and wear a hat, gloves, and scarf when outdoors. Cover your mouth and nose to help warm the air before it reaches your lungs.
- Stay indoors during harsh weather: Avoid going out when it’s very cold, windy, or when air pollution levels are high.
- Create a lung-friendly home: Keep your home at a minimum of 18°C, especially your bedroom. Use a humidifier if the air is dry.
- Ventilate daily: Open windows for about 10 minutes each day to reduce dampness and improve air quality.
- Protect your airways: Breathe through your nose rather than your mouth. A scarf or hood over your face can help warm the air when outside.

🛡️ Prevent Infections

- Avoid triggers: Steer clear of smoky areas, strong-smelling aerosols or cleaning products, and second-hand smoke. Need help quitting? Find your local stop smoking service.
- Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands regularly and wear a mask in crowded or enclosed spaces.
- Avoid crowds: Limit time in busy areas to reduce your risk of catching infections.
💙 Manage Your Condition
- Follow your COPD self-management plan: Keep your reliever inhalers and medications close by. Make sure you have enough supplies.
- Stay active indoors: Gentle movement helps maintain fitness and keeps you warm—just don’t overdo it.
- Eat well: Enjoy nutritious meals and warming foods like soups to maintain your energy.
- Monitor your health: Watch for early signs of infection (e.g., chest tightness, increased coughing). If symptoms worsen, contact your GP or NHS 111.
- Check the weather: Plan ahead before going out—cold, damp, or windy conditions can affect your breathing.
- Seek support:
- Contact your GP if symptoms worsen or new ones appear.
- Ask your pharmacist about supplements. NHS England recommends everyone consider a daily Vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter.
